About Us

GumLeaf Gutter Protection was invented by Steve Lothian is 1994 after the January bushfires. For those who may remember, the January 1994 bushfires in the Blue Mountains of NSW were amongst the worst ever experienced.

Stephen lives in the little hamlet of Bowen Mountain in the Hawkesbury Region which has an over abundance of gum trees. When the bushfire was coming over the hill, Steve, like most property owners, thought at the last minute to clean his gutters. He hadn't worried too much about leaves in the gutters because he had not long fitted a so-called quality plastic gutter guard. To his amazement, when he got up the ladder he found that the plastic gutter guard was buried under 4 inches of dried gum leaves. Cleaning your gutters is not something that you need to do when the bushfire is just over the hill.

After the bushfires, Steve decided to purchase a metal gutter guard but there was nothing on the market that would work. The few metal ones that were available were leaf traps and posed just as big a problem as a gutter full of leaves. Steve is qualified in Mechanical Engineering and having spent many years in product development for the military, he decided to design his own metal gutter guard. The product was so successful that he patented it in 1995 and marketed it Gutta-Arma Leaf and Pest Shield.

Gutta-Arma appeared on numerous TV Shows and was the gutter guard selected by John Jarrett and Noni Hazelhurst for their house on Scotland Island in Pittwater, when building their house on Better Homes and Gardens.
